By PC Tech Support at 2012-09-30 18:50:55
Windows 7's security is much more advanced than preceeding MS operating systems but could still get infected with some annoying viruses, Trojans, and other Malware. Symptoms of serefef included DNS redirection that was most prevalent when trying to use google search results but also appeared when entering URLs into the browser address bar.
When Microsoft Security Essentials was first released, I was skeptical that this would be a good AV scanner. As years have past, my confidence has grown in the ability Microsoft's Antivirus software. So if you have expired Av software or are in need of another license or upgrade, give Microsoft's Security Essentials a try, I think you will be impressed, and it's free.
The three free support tools that were used to clean the virus/trojan was Microsoft's Security Essentials, Microsoft Safety Scanner, and a run of the built-in program SFC.exe (System File Checker ) with the /scannow option.
Tools to Remote the serefef virus trojan
1. Microsoft Essentials
2. Mircrosoft Safety Scanner
3. SFC.exe (built-in System file checker program)

Online desktop support software far out-ways alternatives for providing technical assistance to users. Regardless of the problem time, software for desktop support online through the web helps users get the assistance they need. In the case of virus and ad-ware removal, online support tools such as scanner and remote control software has become an acceptable method for troubleshooting and solving problems. Remote support and online support software that either delivers tools to the desktop level in the form of downloads or are run directly from a browser have become an acceptable method for support ting users. Although there are instances where these tools prove to be inadequate, those are cases where booting from an alternative source such as a USB stick or rescue type CD or DVD are required . Such instances are rare with the level and advancement is online support and online remote control software tools available and only in the more severe cases with desktop-sharing software be inapplicable as a tool for assistance.

For online tools I have used recently ESET online scanner. The online scanner is a nice support tool available right from the web site. An active-x component is added to the browser, the signature or virus definition file is download the the online scanner runs. It is not the fastest scanner and not the slowest. It does a thorough job for a free online tool. it has some options available for detecting within archive files like zipped files and an option to scan memory. This is support tool that has to be accessed and used directly on the computer which technical support needs to scan. In other words it does not have the ability to run a scan over the network on a remote computer. This is not really a shortcoming however because technical support can provide remote support assistance with desktop remote control software that permits access and connections over the Internet. Tech-support can remotely access the computer for which the scan is desired to be run over the web with remote support software. Once on the remote computer the detection can be executed.
