IE9 Windows Server 2008 R2 Terminal Server RDS Server

By PC Tech Support at 2011-12-24 22:44:21

Meet your new browser welcome page

Have a Windows Server 2008 RDS Server? Are you running Citrix XenApp 6 on that server? Updating to IE9 on either may cause all your users to get the "meet your new browser" extra tab opening up when they start internet explorer meet your new browser
or when internet explorer is started from another published app. One of the choices is to fix this problem is to set the express settings and also to allow the "meet your new browser" tab to open. Save you settings and use the default profile on new user accounts logging in. If your users have already logged in then it's kinda too late to use this method if they have any other additional settings that would get lost if their local user profiles are removed.

An alternative method to fix this problem is use use local group policy on each of the xenapp 6 servers. If you already have a 2008 domain controller then you may be able to get away with making the the changes needed and applying it to a domain group policy .
If the server count is not high and you still have a windows 2003 domain and don't want to try adding IE9 administrative templates to your domain, then you can set the local group policy on each of the windows server 2008 R2 terminal server (RDS) server) or on your xenapp server.

The setting will in the registry that can be applied using lcoal group policy will get rid of the meet your new browser welcome page and also set the default settings for IE9 on windows server 2008 R2 RDS terminal server with or without Citrix Xenapp installed on it.

Remote Desktop Connection (Remote Desktop Protocol)

Without Citrix and prior to RDS on 2008 R2 server, remote desktop protocol was a client connection application and for remote access for support of servers it was and still use one of the most widely used applications. Built-into Microsoft server and professional level of desktop operating systems, it was the default method for getting remote access and control of servers for remote administration and server and desktop support. On desktops this remote access and control feature was not normally turned on by default for remote control with the installation of the desktop operating system, however with a few clicks it could be and was enabled, even remotely by using remote registry access. The default colors allowed for an RDP session with the earlier clients was often limited by default to a maximum of 24 bit color. This was not a technical limitation but a settings in the system's registry of the target computer. With a quick registry change on the remote computer, the color limit can be increased to true color.

The meet your new browser tab was causing some headaches for users. Thank you for this post. I was able to fix the problem on my Windows 2008 R2 Xenapp installation with Microsoft Remote Desktop Services (RDS Terminal server).
Citrix Xenapp support really couldn't help me out as they said it was a Microsoft problem and not a Xenapp Citrix problem. Thank you for providing the support and information that enabled me to correct the issue by applying your suggestion to my windows servers.
I also have Xenapp Citrix Fundamentals version 6 of course with a terminal server RDS (remote desktop Services server) installed on the same windows server R2 version of server. The Xenapp server were experiencing the same issue after upgrading the browser to Internet Explorer 9.
