Can Exchange 2007 Work On a Single Server?

By PC Tech Support at 2008-09-13 19:18:39

Lately, a question regarding whether Microsoft Exchange 2007 can have all roles installed and run on a single server. The answer to this question is yes. I recently installed Exchange 2007 and was able to get all the functions/role to install and operate on a single server box.

The installation is fairly straight forward and in the end, don't be surprised, that no email can be sent from the exchange server until a send connector is defined. All roles can work on a single server and although Microsoft made a great decision allowing for implementors to break up the components to the Exchange server (long overdue and needed in my opinion), all roles can be successfully installed and operate one piece of hardware.

The five Exchange 2007 Server Roles are as follows:

· Mailbox Server Role
· Client Access Server (CAS) role
· Hub Transport Server (HTS) role
· Edge Transport role
· Unified Messaging

Have a problem with viewing attachments in Outlook web Access (OWA) with Exchange 2007 and IE7. The following link is to a site that has the solution. I used it and it worked for me.

Thanks for the heads up on this. I was worried that Exchange 2007 had to be installed on at least two servers.
From what I read about Microsoft Exchange 2007 email server, it seemed that the edge transport server had to be on it's own physical server.
